So, we flip furniture, right? Doesn’t sound very romantic and dreamy but that’s essentially what we’re doing. Don’t get me wrong, I love the work. Love finding the junky pieces, painting, distressing, photographing, making things beautiful. But for me at this stage in life, I’m attempting to accomplish two things: build a business doing something I love to do and help my kids learn a little bit about work and money management as they buy and refinish their own pieces.
Here is my latest “flip.” This dresser was purchased off of craigslist. It was a plain looking thing… nothing special about the design or finish. It sat in the garage for a while and on Saturday, I decided to flip this thing by painting it a color combo that is sure to sell rather than try out one of the ideas I keep stashed away in my idea notebook. Best laid plans….
Well, the finished product isn’t exactly what I planned. I wanted to give it a smooth, finish, low on the distressing. But as I worked on it, I felt as though it needed texture. So throwing caution to the wind, I whipped out the sander and assulted that silly dresser in an attempt to breath some life into it.
After sanding, I liked it and left it alone.
The chipped paint effect on the top was a complete accident. The sander kind of scraped the paint off of the top (see picture below).
Colors and technique used:
Paint
-Base: ASCP Ochre
-Top: ASCP Provence, Benjamin Moore dark gray
Distressing technique
-Used a sander with 220 and 80 grit paper to scrap away the paint
-Finished with steel wool to get that super smooth finish

Did you just use the original hardware and paint them the same color as the dresser?
Hi: Yes, I just painted over the originals with the white color used for the dresser. I wanted this piece to be totally about paint and texture. So, changing out the drawer pulls seemed to detract from that. Thanks for your comment!
Very cute! Distressing does it every time for me!
Yeah. I usually can’t wait to get to that stage. Lots of magic happens when sanding, doesn’t it? Thanks for the comment!
Cool. My sister enjoys craigslist projects as well. It turned out nice, love the top & distressing!
