Nautical V - First in a series

Martha Leone

I'm starting a new series based on nautical signal flags. A brief explanation... these flags are used to communicate messages from one ship to another. Each flag, which has a numerical and letter correspondence, can be used to spell out messages. I'm certainly not an expert on the subject but I do think they might still be used today. I'm drawn to the graphic quality of the images and the concept of alternate ways to communicate... who knows, maybe I'll start using these flags to spell out "do you homework now" to my kids!

Here's my first piece. It's a small free-standing drawer that can be used for storage. We use it to store our old silverplated silverware. On each piece I do in this series, I'll feature one of the nautical flags as inspiration for the design. And just for fun, I'll include the letter and the flag somewhere on the piece like I did on the box. Seems like this could keep me busy for some time!
