Glazing Red.

Martha Leone

Last week, I started playing around with glazes and waxes. Here's what I did on this piece: -The red portion of the dresser was first painted a dark charcoal color then up to four layers of a tinted glaze were applied. The glaze was tinted with Behr California Poppy. -After the paint dried, I brought the dresser and my ASCP dark wax into the heat of the day. After both warmed up, I began to apply the dark wax (without first applying the clear wax which is recommended). It went on very smoothly and I was able to manipulate it easily since it was warm. I moved it into the garage to dry. Below: The left side of the picture below shows the paint color without wax. Right side shows how different the color looks when the dark wax is applied. Lessons learned: If you want to get a nice smooth streaked look with dark wax on a large flat surface (like the top of this dresser), apply it with determined and confident movements and don't second guess yourself as you're applying. By now it's kinda obvious that I'm crazy about red. I'm going to try to put the red away for a while and concentrate on other colors. I promise.
